OxyContin is the brand name for a semi-synthetic, laboratory manufactured analgesic called “oxycodone hydrochloride” a powerful painkiller that provides around-the-clock relief for people struggling with unremitting pain. OxyContin, often termed “Oxy,” is a time-release opioid analgesic that can provide users with up to 12 hours of pain relief. It is labeled a Scheduled II controlled substance, which is classified as a high potential for abuse. An agonist opioid, oxycodone is one of the most effective ways at controlling pain for many individuals. Oxy has become one of the more rapidly growing drugs of abuse in the United States; according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, it’s been estimated that 1.6 million people in the United States use prescription painkillers for non-medical purposes.

When Oxy enters the body, it stimulates certain opioid receptors located throughout the central nervous system, in the brain, and along the spinal cord providing the intended effects. Along with the pain relief achieved by using OxyContin, comes decreased respirations, a feeling of blissful euphoria, and a overall sense of wellbeing. As with all opiate narcotics, abusing oxycodone can lead to addiction. Many who abuse Oxy do so by crushing the drug, chewing the pills, snorting the powder, or liquefying the powder and injecting it directly into a muscle or vein. These methods of abuse can lead to dangerous consequences, as well as allowing the user to achieve a greater rush or pleasurable high.

People who are struggling to overcome their addiction to OxyContin may find that they cannot simply stop using on their own. As addiction is a disease of the mind and body, The Refuge understands how hard kicking the Oxy habit can be. We’ve helped countless individuals just like you successfully overcome their addiction to OxyContin and go on to live happy, productive, and sober lives.

Our treatment center’s philosophy and treatment benefits

Our amazing staff will use this information to help us formulate a plan of care for your stay with us that meets all of your needs – mind, body, and soul. Types of Treatment

Types of OxyContin addiction treatment offered at The Refuge, A Healing Place

When you come to us for help to overcome your Oxy addiction, you’ll first undergo a variety of tests and evaluations to allow us to best form a picture for your plan of care during your stay with us. Our medical evaluation will allow us to determine if you are physically addicted to Oxy as well as diagnose any medical conditions that may have resulted from your addiction. The psychiatric evaluation will allow us to gain a better picture of the challenges you are facing as well as diagnose any co-occurring mental disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder.

If it is determined by our medical team that you are physically dependent upon OxyContin, you will begin your stay with us in our detox unit. The Refuge understands your fears about detox and will be certain to explain everything that will happen before it occurs so that you can prepare yourself. During this part of your rehab stay, you’ll be slowly and effectively detoxed from Oxy and any other substances in your body. You’ll also begin medical treatment for any medical conditions that you’ve been diagnosed with during your evaluation.

At The Refuge, we’ve learned that the best way to manage addiction to OxyContin is through a combination of detox, medication management, and therapeutic interventions. Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay with us to help control withdrawal symptoms or manage other symptoms, and will be slowly tapered down as you learn more effective coping strategies. Individuals who have co-occurring disorders may need long-term medication therapy to continue their healing process. The decision to use medication will be based upon the recommendations of your treatment center team.

Individual therapy will be used to allow you one-on-one time with your therapist in order to discuss issues you don’t care to address in group therapy. You’ll spend time focusing on addiction, recovery, coping mechanisms, and ways to handle relapse triggers. You’ll also work with your therapist to uncover things that may have led to your addiction.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a therapeutic technique we use at The Refuge to help you understand the ways in which your negative thinking impacts your behavior. You’ll work with a therapist to uncover negative thought patterns and correct them with more appropriate ways of viewing the world. This should, in turn, help you to best understand the ways in which your thoughts are influencing your behaviors.

Group therapy: It is very important for individuals struggling with addiction to engage in group therapy. Through the group therapy format, you will be able to work with individuals who are struggling with similar addictions. We offer process-based and psychoeducational groups. Process groups are designed to allow you the opportunity to process your feelings about a given topic such as addiction or medication while psychoeducational groups are available to allow you the chance to learn more about your disorder, recovery, sobriety, and coping mechanisms.

Family therapy: Addiction is considered a family disease as most members of the family are impacted by addiction. Family is a vital part of the recovery from substance abuse and The Refuge believes that family involvement is imperative. We offer family sessions to our residents and their loved ones to help mend broken bonds, reestablish relationships, and educate one another about the ways in which addiction has impacted the family dynamic. We’ll also provide your loved ones with connections to available community resources such as Nar-Anon and Al-Anon to allow for their further healing.

The Refuge is a holistic healing center designed to treat all facets that make you a unique individual, and therefore offer a variety of best in class methods to compliment traditional therapies. These evidence-based methods may include the following:

  • A.A. and N.A.
  • Art therapy

  • Adventure therapy
  • Reki
  • Massage

As the time for discharge draws closer, you’ll sit down with our discharge planning team to determine the next best steps for your recovery. If it’s determined that you need to slowly integrate back into your life, we offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP). This treatment option will work to allow you the chance to continue your therapeutic progress during the day while returning home to a stable environment. If you’ve made enough progress at The Refuge and you feel ready to return to your community, we’ll provide referrals to outpatient therapies as well as connections to available community resources.
